Der Original-Anime Black Fox entführt uns in die Welt der fröhlichen und aufgeweckten Rikka Isurugi. Als kleines Mädchen spielt sie mit ihrem geliebten Großvater gern Verstecken und dieser – als 26. Anführer des Isurugi-Ninja-Clans – lässt es sich dabei nicht nehmen, ihr spielerisch alles Wichtige beizubringen, um selbst mal ein mächtiger Ninja zu werden. Dieser arbeitet für die Riesenfirma Gradsheim und durch seine brillanten Erfindungen wird sein Genie hoch geschätzt. Sein neuester Geniestreich sind sog. Tierdrohnen: kleine Tierroboter, die, mit einer echten künstlichen Intelligenz ausgestattet, als beste Freunde und Begleiter für Menschen fungieren sollen. So begeistert ist die kleine Rikka von der Arbeit ihres Vaters, dass sie nicht nur denselben Pfad wie er gehen, sondern sogar dieselbe Universität wie er besuchen möchte.

Jahre später hat sie es endlich geschafft: Sie hat den Eignungstest für ihre Wunschuniversität, der University of North Cundy, bestanden und ist pünktlich zu ihrem Geburtstag auf dem Weg nach Hause, um ihrer Familie die frohe Kunde zu überbringen. Doch statt eines warmen Empfanges und einer Geburtstagstorte bietet sich ihr ein schauriges Bild: Das Wohnzimmer verwüstet und von Blut befleckt, fehlt von ihrem Vater und Großvater jede Spur … Ihr Zuhause wurde von Einsatzkräften Gradsheims angegriffen, die es auf die Baupläne der Tierdrohnen abgesehen haben. Rikkas Vater, der die Firma bereits vor Jahren verlassen hatte, weigerte sich, seine Erfindung zu Waffen zu machen und wurde so zu einem »Feind« für Gradsheim. Als Rikkas Vater und Großvater vor ihren Augen erschossen werden, bricht für sie die Welt zusammen. Nur dank ihrer drei Tierdrohnen gelingt ihr die Flucht, doch nun brennt in dem einst so friedliebenden Mädchen der Hass und sie schwört Rache …
