Sie träumen davon, durch den freien, weiten Himmel zu fliegen – ein Traum, von dem sie wissen, dass er niemals in Erfüllung gehen wird …
In einer fernen Zukunft, in der die Erde weitgehend zerstört und ein Großteil der menschlichen Zivilisation ausgelöscht wurde, errichteten die wenigen Überlebenden wandelnde Festungsstädte – die „Plantations“ –, um sich selbst und die wenigen Reste der Zivilisation am Leben zu halten. Die Kinder der Bewohner leben in einer Trainingseinrichtung, die weithin als „Vogelkäfig“ bekannt ist. Ohne je mit der Außenwelt in Berührung gekommen zu sein, werden sie dort für den Kampf gegen die mysteriösen Lebensformen ausgebildet, die die Menschheit so dezimierten. So lernen die Kinder, wie man die riesigen Roboter, die „Franxx“, steuert und wie man in ihnen kämpft – denn nur Pilot eines „Franxx“ zu sein, ist ein Beweis für die eigene Existenz.
Code-Nummer 016 – Hiro – wurde einst als Wunderkind angesehen, doch als er mit seinen Kameraden nicht mehr mithalten konnte und es ihm nicht mehr möglich war, einen „Franxx“ zu steuern, verlor seine Existenz jegliche Bedeutung … schließlich ist es fast dasselbe als würde er gar nicht existieren. Eines Tages jedoch erscheint ein mysteriöses Mädchen vor ihm. Zero Two, so ihr Name, schaut ihn mit vertrautem Blick an und während Lichtreflexe mit den zwei glänzenden Hörnern auf ihrer Stirn spielen, sagt sie: „Ich habe dich gefunden, mein Darling.“
