Der hochbegabte Schüler Light Yagami findet ein geheimnisvolles Notizbuch, das Shinigami Ryuk, ein Todesgott, aus Langeweile in der Welt der Menschen zurückgelassen hat. Laut Gebrauchsanweisung stirbt jeder Mensch, dessen Namen man in dieses "Death Note" schreibt. Obwohl Light zunächst skeptisch ist, probiert er das Buch aus und stellt schnell fest, dass aus dem Spiel tödlicher Ernst wird. Doch statt die Finger vom "Death Note" zu lassen, brennt er darauf, alles Böse auszulöschen und die Welt radikal zu verändern.
