Schon seit längst vergangenen Zeiten gibt es die Legende eines menschenfressenden Dämons, der im Wald sein Unwesen treibt. Aufgrund dessen trauen sich die ortsansässigen Bewohner nicht mehr bei Nacht hinaus. Die Legende besagt weiterhin, dass ein Dämonentöter durch das Land zieht, um solch blutdurstige Dämonen zu jagen. Für den jungen Tanjirou wird das bald zur Realität.
Seit dem Tod seines Vaters hat Tanjirou es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, seine Familie über Wasser zu halten. Trotz des harten Lebens haben sie es geschafft, glücklich zu sein. Doch diese wohlige Wärme der Glückseligkeit wurde mit einem Mal zerstört, als Tanjirou seine Familie abgeschlachtet vorfindet. Einzig und allein seine Schwester Nezuko hat überlebt, obgleich sie sich in einen Dämonen verwandelt hat. Überraschenderweise zeigt Nezuko noch Zeichen menschlicher Emotionen und Gedanken. So beginnt Tanjirous Kampf gegen die Dämonen, um seine Schwester wieder zu einem Menschen zu machen.
