Kousei Arima war ein weithin bekannter Klavierspieler, doch seine Karriere endete abrupt, als mit dem Tod seiner Mutter und Lehrerin seine Welt zusammenbrach. Aufgrund des Schocks ist er seitdem nicht mehr in der Lage, die Töne oder den Klang seines Klaviers wahrzunehmen. Seine ehemals von Musik geprägte Welt versank in Stille und Dunkelheit.

Auch zwei Jahre später ist Kousei immer noch entschlossen, ein Leben ohne Musik zu führen. Seine Freizeit verbringt er lieber mit seinen Freunden Ryouta Watari und Tsubaki Suwabe. Doch ein Mädchen wirft schließlich seine Vorsätze über den Haufen: Kaori Miyazono, die nicht nur wunderschön ist und eine offenherzige Persönlichkeit besitzt, sondern deren Stil Violine zu spielen einem Abbild dieser positiven Eigenschaften gleicht. Mit ihrer gefühlsbetonten Vortragsweise führt Kaori Kousei wieder hin zur Welt der Musik und zeigt ihm abermals deren Freuden.
