Im Reich der Drachen herrscht Krieg zwischen zwei benachbarten Nationen. In diesem Konflikt spielt ein Drache eine ausschlaggebende Rolle, der durch einen Vertrag gebunden auf der Seite der einen Nation kämpft und Schlachtfelder reihenweise in Schutt und Asche hinterlässt. Doch haben auch so übermächtige Wesen wie Drachen eine verheerende Schwäche: ihre Zähne. Um sicherzustellen, dass sie keinen Schaden erleiden und nicht von den Karies-Mushi, Kreaturen, die sich regelmäßig in seinem Maul bilden, zerfressen werden, wurde dem Militär so eine besondere Einheit aus Freiwilligen unterstellt, die sich nur um die Pflege der Drachenzähne kümmert ‒ die sogenannten Drachenzahnärzte.
Als Nonoko, eine junge und noch recht unerfahrene Drachenzahnärztin, am Morgen nach einer Schlacht einen Rundgang macht, findet sie einen Kindersoldaten der feindlichen Partei bewusstlos auf einem Zahn liegen. Bell, unter welchem Namen sich der Junge Nonoko vorstellt, war eigentlich in Folge des Krieges gefallen und befand sich wie die Seelen der anderen Verstorbenen deshalb im Inneren der Drachenzähne, wurde aber von dort heraus wiedererweckt. Ein solches übernatürliches Phänomen gilt unter den Drachenzahnärzten jedoch als schlechtes Omen, das sich nur vor furchtbaren Katastrophen ereignen soll. Gemeinsam müssen sich Nonoko und Bell so der großen Gefahr stellen, die die beiden noch erwarten soll.
