Taeko Okajima ist eine typische Büroangestellte in einem großen Unternehmen in einer großen Stadt. Als sie Urlaub auf dem Land in der Yamagata Präfektur - im Heimatort ihres Schwagers - macht, erinnert sie sich während ihrer Reise an Ereignisse, als sie in der fünften Klasse war. Während ihres Aufenthalts in Yamagata arbeitet sie hart, aber glücklich als Bäuerin und ist dabei von ihren Verwandten und anderen Dorfbewohnern umgeben, was dazu führt, dass sie sich an weitere Dinge erinnern muss. Ihre Gastfreundschaft sorgt dafür, dass Takeo ihre eigene Lebensart noch einmal überdenken muss.
Der Film Tränen der Erinnerung - Only Yesterday wurde unter der Regie von Isao Takahata produziert, der bereits bei anderen Filmen wie Die letzten Glühwürmchen oder Serien wie Heidi Regie führte.
