In Bakemonogatari geht es um den Oberschüler Koyomi Araragi, der in der jährlichen japanischen Golden Week von einem Vampir angefallen und gebissen wird. Seitdem sieht er seltsame, übernatürliche Dinge wie Gespenster und Dämonen. Unter diesen paranormalen Dingen findet sich auch seine Mitschülerin Hitagi Senjougahara, die noch nie ein Wort mit ihm gewechselt hat. Sie stolpert, fällt kopfüber die Stufen hinab - und wird zum Glück noch rechtzeitig von Koyomi aufgefangen. Dabei erkennt er ihr Geheimnis - sie hat kaum Gewicht. Hitagi meint, dass es so wäre, seit sie eine seltsame Krabbe getroffen hat. Letztendlich entschließt sich Koyomi dazu, Hitagi mit ihrem Geheimnis zu helfen, weswegen er mit ihr zu Meme Oshino, einem Mann mittleren Alters, der ihm vor nicht allzu langer Zeit mit seinem Vampir-Problem helfen konnte, geht...

Jeder Arc beschäftigt sich mit Koyomi und einem anderen mysteriösen Mädchen und er fängt langsam an zu denken, dass die Ereignisse rund um die Mädchen irgendeinen zentralen Grund haben...
