Der Achtzehnjährige Shintaro Kisaragi ist ein Hikikomori und Computerfreak, der seit zwei Jahren sein Zimmer nicht mehr verlassen hat. Sein Leben könnte ruhig und friedlich sein, wäre da nicht Ene, ein virtuelles Mädchen, welches er ein Jahr zuvor beim Öffnen eines Mailanhangs heruntergeladen hatte und das seitdem auf seinem Bildschirm lebt. Bei einem Streit wird plötzlich die Computertastatur beschädigt und Shintaro beschließt so schnell wie möglich eine neue zu besorgen. Dazu muss er allerdings das Haus verlassen - das erste mal seit zwei Jahren - und prompt gerät er in eine Geiselnahme im Einkaufzentrum. Er und Ene schaffen es, wie durch ein Wunder, die Erpresser zu überwältigen und die Geiseln zu befreien. Doch seine Situation wird immer verrückter als er sich kurz darauf bei den Mekekushi Dan (wörtl. "Augenbinden-Bande") wiederfindet, einer Gruppe von Teenagern mit mysteriösen Augenkräften. Doch was hat er überhaupt mit der ganzen Sache zu tun?
